How to Beat the Oil Rig Boss in Rogue Point

The Oil Rig boss is Rogue Point 1.0’s pyro headline: a flame-throwing MERX adversary that punishes static stacks and greedy loot habits on an already exposure-heavy map. Beat it like a raid phase — prep, control space, burst on call, then extract — not like a random Heavy with a special VFX.

Visual brief

The launch trailer shows the flame identity and Oil Rig staging. Use it to set expectations, then apply the rules below.

Prep before you commit

  • Fund armor and medkits before novelty guns
  • Bring AP ammo path for armored windows
  • Assign one smoke seat that still has utility after exterior crossings
  • Agree revive language: who smokes, who picks, who holds
  • Read Oil Rig for walkway discipline and Oil Rig boss for threat identity

Pair kit choices with Loadouts and Tier List. New 1.0 guns like Mule, KT50, and A1M can help specific seats — they are not mandatory if your old S-tier seats are funded.

Space control beats hero DPS

Flame cones punish clumped stacks. Spread just enough that one cone cannot delete the raid, but stay close enough for focus fire and revive trades. Do not split into four solo adventures across open grating — that is how adds and fire isolate players.

Damage and add plan

  1. Clear or isolate the add threats that deny movement and revive lanes.
  2. Call a burst window — four staggered magazines feel like half a squad.
  3. Use explosives or AP to break armor efficiency when the window opens.
  4. Reposition after each flame sweep instead of greed-shooting through it.
  5. Leave a path to cover that is not the same door the whole lobby is fighting over.

If your lobby tunnels the boss while a Sniper or Berserker owns the only safe lane, you are fighting the wrong problem. Revisit MERX Classes.

Utility timing

Smoke is revive insurance and crossing insurance — not a panic button for every walkway. Spend early only if the stack is already dead without it. Keep one charge for the post-kill scramble when reinforcement timers do not care that you just got a trophy kill.

After the kill

Reload, heal, reform, then extract. Oil Rig exposure after a boss fight is where many “we had it” wipes happen. Apply How to Extract Safely immediately. Optional loot on open grating is banned unless every seat reports green ammo and armor.

Solo and trio notes

Solo operators must invent trade windows with utility and positioning; expect longer kites and stricter ammo honesty. Trios should merge rear/utility seats and accept slower clears. Full four-stacks should still assign jobs — four silent heroes die in fire together.

For the separate endgame commander, use How to Beat the 5-Star Merc. For launch context, see Version 1.0.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Rogue Point operators.

Is the Oil Rig boss the same as the 5-Star Merc?

No. The Oil Rig boss is a flame-throwing MERX encounter tied to the Oil Rig site. The 5-Star Merc is a separate endgame commander fight.

What kills squads most often?

Standing still in the flame cone, staggered reloads, and looting before the extract reset after the kill.

Which guns help?

Controllable full-auto with AP for armor windows, plus a close-range answer if the boss or adds force modules. Bring smoke for revive and crossing insurance.
